The latest trailer for “Man of Steel,” the new Superman film that sees Henry Cavill don the red cape of the famous hero, begins with a cryptic transmission from Michael Shannon’s General Zod, warning the citizens of Earth, “You are not alone.”
Zod’s chilling speech, in which he demands that the last son of Krypton surrender or bring about the destruction of his adopted planet, serves as the backdrop for a number of scenic shots from the film, set for a June 14 release.
“Man of Steel” is directed by Zack Snyder from a story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer, the writing team behind the Dark Knight trilogy, which modernized Batman and broke box-office records. But reviving the world’s first comic-book superhero on the big screen — Superman turns 75 this year — is no small task.
“In the comic-book universe, you have all these sort of minor celebrities that have been put up as the end-all, be-all,” Snyder said in an interview with Hero Complex, citing past films that have featured Green Lantern, Ghost Rider and the Punisher among others. “And then you have the fallen king who’s sadly relegated to the shadows. It’s cool to resurrect him and say, ‘Understand that this is the granddaddy of all superheroes.’”
“It’s the most realistic movie I’ve made,” Snyder added of “Man of Steel.” “There’s no tongue in anyone’s cheek. I’m not apologizing for Superman in any way. I’m saying, ‘Superman is a thing that must be taken seriously and embraced and understood.’”

Veteran comedienne Carol Burnett will be honored with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. The John F. Kennedy Center announces that the 80-year-old actress, singer and writer is the recipient of its annual award for "people who have had an impact on American society in ways similar" to the prize's namesake this year.
"From her television program and appearances, as well as her performances on Broadway in 'Once Upon a Mattress' and in film, Carol Burnett has entertained generations of fans with her vibrant wit and hilarious characters," says David M. Rubenstein, the Kennedy Center chairman. "We are delighted to pay tribute to this unique and beloved entertainer."
Burnett herself has reacted to being chosen as the winner of the prize, stating, "I can't believe I'm getting a humor prize from the Kennedy Center. It's almost impossible to be funnier than the people in Washington."
The Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner, who is best known for her long-running TV variety show "The Carol Burnett Show" on CBS, will receive the award in a ceremony set to be held on October 20 and broadcast on PBS October 30.
Burnett began her career performing on the New York circuit of cabarets and night clubs in the late 1950s, and was notable for a hit parody number called "I Made a Fool of Myself Over John Foster Dulles". She had a breakout success on Broadway in 1959 before making a TV debut with "The Garry Moore Show".
Her variety show "Carol Burnett Show" was a hit during its run from 1967 to 1978, earning her numerous Emmy and Golden Globe Awards. Her film credits include "Annie" and "Noises Off". She appeared as a special guest on "Glee" in a 2010 episode.

Daft Punk’s ‘Random Access Memories’ dances through the decades
• DANCE
Daft Punk, Random Access Memories (Columbia) * * * 1/2
French dance duo Daft Punk — Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo —have done more to propel futuristic electronic dance music (EDM) onto festival stages than any other act since the release of 1997’s Homework. Now, the pair, having exhausted EDM’s possibilities and critical of its current sound, point to EDM’s future by looking to the past on their first studio set in eight years.
On the ambitious, vaguely conceptual Random Access Memories, arguably the year’s most anticipated pop album, Daft Punk eschew the digital coldness of machine-made music by recording nearly the entire 70-minute set with top-shelf studio musicians like drummers Omar Hakim (Dire Straits) and Quincy Jones’ go-to beat meister, John “JR” Robinson. Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers still nails the scratching, syncopated riffs that made Le Freak an inescapable disco hit 35 years ago on his two funky contributions, Get Lucky and Lose Yourself to Dance which also feature input from Pharrell Williams.
Giorgio Moroder, the musical mastermind behind Donna Summer in the 1970s, gets a whole nine-minute track of his own and it’s a masterstroke. Giorgio by Moroder, a documentary in song , shouldn’t work. For its first few minutes, Moroder simply talks interview-style about the evolution of his music — and disco itself — atop a loping bass line tempo. The Italian producer lectures about his early years in Germany and his creation of an album that sounds very much like Summer’s 1977 opus, I Remember Yesterday.
“I wanted to do an album with the sounds of the ’50s, the sounds of the ’60s, the sounds of the ’70s and a sound of the future. I know the synthesizer. Why don’t I use the synthesizer which is the sound of the future? I didn’t have any idea what to do so we put a click track on a 24-track, which was synced to a Moog module. I knew that could be the sound of the future but I didn’t realize the impact it would be.”
Interesting chatter for pop culture junkies, but how often would one want to listen to a producer’s narration? But, ingeniously, the music takes over, evoking the decades Moroder discusses, and morphs into a hypnotic disco groove and swirls headlong into 21st century club dynamics replete with a string quartet and guitar solo. Each play reveals new dimensions.
Daft Punk even manage to lure ’70s easy listening songwriter/actor Paul Williams ( Evergreen, The Rainbow Connection) onto the dance floor for Touch, a truly odd, shape-shifting, eight-minute epic. Williams, his voice altered electronically but still recognizable, portrays a robot who seeks humanity — much in keeping with the album’s central theme.
Along the way, Random Access Memories offers bits of melancholia on The Game of Love, a ballad about how dance offers a brief respite from daily disappointments. Fragments of Time is a slice of sunny California pop/rock, of all things, and the sci-fi courting Contact brings this giddy, indulgent, affecting album to a prog-rock-flavored close.
Dance music’s The Dark Side of the Moon meets Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is a revelation — a full-fledged album in a singles market that will have you studying its painstakingly detailed analog grooves at the gym, on the dance floor and on the home stereo all the way through awards season.

The X Factor Begins! See Demi Lovato, Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio …

Let The X Factor begin!
Filming for the hit reality competition show has officially kicked off in Charleston, S.C., Tuesday, and there's already a "girl power" theme for the Fox series' third season.
Demi Lovato and newly announced judges Kelly Rowland and Paulina Rubio all took the X Factor stage to greet fans and aspiring stars as they waiting for producer and fellow judge Simon Cowell to arrive.

What Kelly Rowland, Paulina Rubio bring to ‘X Factor’
Neither new judge generates the sort of fanfare that came with snagging Spears, but that’s not a bad thing. “X Factor” has already gone through a handful of judges, with Paula Abdul, Nicole Scherzinger and Cheryl Cole having done short bids.
Rowland and Rubio also don't come with the sort of baggage of previous judges (Spears' uncertain stability, Abdul's "Idol" past), and that's what "X Factor" needs now more than ever.
PHOTOS: 'The X Factor': Dream judges
But Rowland and Rubio don’t just come with industry cred, they also have serious judging experience. Rowland previously served as a judge on the eighth season of the more successful British version of “The X Factor,” and Rubio judged "The Voice Mexico" last year and is currently judging "La Voz Kids," a Spanish version of "The Voice" for children.
"The X Factor" has failed to reach the high mark that Cowell set when he walked away from “American Idol” to bring his successful British singing competition to U.S. audiences (“Idol,” pale ratings aside, still trumps it), and the show is largely seen as being on life support.
So what will Rowland and Rubio bring to “The X Factor” this fall?
Paulina Rubio
The Latin superstar isn’t quite a household name for American viewers, but the 41-year-old has been in the industry for most of her life. As with Rowland, she came from a teen-pop group, and then went on to find a bounty of solo success, selling more than 20 million records internationally, so she knows a thing or two about reaching a global market.
Having Rubio on board gives “X Factor” some much needed cred with a demographic that’s been strangely underserved on these types of competitions, but in recent years have seen crossover megastars such as Jennifer Lopez and Shakira flourish. Also, Rubio’s experience with young talent on "La Voz Kids” will be a bonus, given that “X Factor” has the lowest age limit of both “Idol” and “The Voice.”
Kelly Rowland
Each show needs a diva, and Rowland will fill that role nicely. She spent half her life in one of the biggest girl groups of all time, Destiny’s Child, and has the Grammys and platinum plaques to back up whatever advice she doles out. Her solo career isn’t too shabby either.
With Destiny’s Child, Rowland was trained to straddle both RB and pop seamlessly, and her solo work has jumped across genres. She plunged into the Europop world with her David Guetta collaboration, "When Love Takes Over," which helped usher in a wave of urban acts flirting with EDM textures.
And if she needs some help mentoring, Rowland is the only judge who has Beyoncé on speed dial.

Robert Pattinson was spotted moving all his stuff out of Kristen Stewart's home after the couple reportedly split.
"Kristen totally went out of her way to make Rob's birthday super special," a source told Hollywood Life.
"She invited friends over to go swimming and just hang out for the late afternoon and evening. At the last minute, Rob said he didn't want to make his birthday a big deal and said he was just going to hang with the guys."

During the argument, "all this stuff came up,” a source told Us Weekly, referring to Stewart’s July 2012 affair with "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders, who was married at the time.
Allegedly the “Twilight” costars were bickering for days "about the cheating, about how selfish she always is, about how moody she always is," the source explained to the mag.

At the time of the scandal, Stewart publicly apologized to her beau of three years.

The RPatz-KStew insider continued that even though Pattinson has packed his bags, "(he) is so torn ... they could get back together."
